Rhythmic Quilt Dance Project

The APSARA Rhythmic Quilt Dance Project is a program in which youths from Park Village housing project are taught the dancing patterns and motion of the multi-cultural dances of regions in Southeast Asia. This dance project was established to preserve heritage and tradition. With these efforts, APSARA hopes to instill the sense of self-confidence and self-identity within each dancer.

This project brings together youth of diverse ethnic backgrounds (Cambodian, Hmong, Laotian, Filipino and Vietnamese):
- to research
- to learn and
- to perform traditional dances from their respective cultures.

Through this project, APSARA hopes to:
- Reduces prejudice and racial tension
- Increases confidence, interpersonal and leadership skills of participants.
- Preserves and documents traditional art forms.

The Documentary - DANCE!
Celebrating The Premiere on February 18, 2007

Be ready to experience the Power of "Dance!" through a compelling documentary about APSARA's Rhythmic Quilt Dance Project, where children are taught the beautiful and vibrant multi-cultural dances of five Asian nationalities. The documentary features candid interviews with APSARA Executive Director Sovanna Koeurt and Dance Instructors Virginia Navarro and Kuntheera Tuy. This documentary made its World Premiere on February 18, 2007 at Pacific Theatre at University of the Pacific (Pacific), an event hosted by Jacoby Center at Pacific. This documentary is made by Cambodian-American Artist Sophoan Sorn.
